The Early Years Champions is a group of academics and expert practitioners who were brought together by WAVE in July 2011 because of their common interest in ensuring that Government policy gives sufficient priority to the importance of the early years. The group, which is co-chaired by the Conservative MP Andrea Leadsom and WAVE’s CEO George Hosking, acts as an independent forum for sharing the latest research and good practice within the group and with policy-makers locally and nationally.
Many of the Early Years Champions worked with WAVE in 2011 and 2012 to support the joint project with the Department for Education to look at early years policy. The expertise of the Early Years Champions was critical in shaping our most recent report ‘Conception to Age 2 – the age of opportunity’.
In 2013 the Early Years Champions formed the basis of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Conception to Age 2 – The First 1001 Days, with Tim Loughton co-chairing this APPG along with Labour MP Frank Field. Caroline Lucas MP (Green Party) and Mark Durkan MP (SDLP) are vice-chairs. The group is also providing support to the project to make 70/30 [link] a reality in local areas across the UK.
